How Much Should a New Garage Door Cost?

The cost of a new garage depends on a few variables: Size, Installation, Style/Features, and Material.  Shop around to be better informed….consider it just like getting any other quote for home repairs.

Let’s start with size. Garage door quantity fits whatever your needs are whether it be one door, two doors, or three garage doors or if you would need a custom door built. Garage doors come in standard sizes as singles or doubles which are readily available. Custom sizes need specifications to size, features, and materials from your supplier, builder, or architect. Keep in mind that time is needed for the supplier to notify the manufacturer, actual manufacturing, and delivery. Expect higher costs with any custom manufactured garage door.

Installation costs will vary due to existing hardware, tracks, and framework at the opening. If you are replacing a garage door, size for size, it may be cost-effective to retrofit the existing garage door hardware. However, keep in mind, the opposite may be true. If you are replacing an older garage door that may have ineffective hardware, tracking rails, and framework to accommodate the new door, the existing foundation may not be worth the cost to upgrade the mechanisms. It may be wiser and cost-effective to demolish the old hardware, tracking rails, and framework and install the new garage door with its current mechanisms already fitted. Newer all-inclusive garage doors, models already out-fitted, will be more efficient in function and cost.

Style and Features clearly will depend on your budget. There are several standard styles, mostly related to size and function. Some features like added windows, automation and locking mechanisms will all be upgrades to the standard garage door cost. Usually, there will be additional installation costs associated with non-standard features. It will be to your advantage to ask the installer about any and all additional installation costs associated with the particular style and features you are looking to have.

There are a few materials to consider: Classic Steel, Aluminum, Wood, Fiberglass… again, ask what materials are available from your supplier. There are also composites for strength and durability and all glass for aesthetics. In addition to basic models in these materials, any garage door will or should come with upgrades to style and features. Standard garage doors are manufactured in materials such as steel, wood, and aluminum, usually prefabricated, so they are readily available and be the most cost-efficient. Upgrades in the material will come with higher costs and likely custom manufactured but may be more cost-effective based on weather tolerances, strength, and durability. Your budget will decide.

Not mentioned earlier, but something you will want to consider is how the garage door closes. There is a rubber seal strip at the bottom of the garage doors creating a seal between the door and the garage floor. This seal acts as a barrier to weather, animals (insects, rodents, etc), and water. In addition, it can save on energy bills by maintaining heat in the winter. Garage door seals are designed to close gaps, not just on the bottom of the door, but seals are available for the left and right side and the top. Ask your supplier what seal options are available to your choice of door and also ask what upgrades to side and top seals are available. Bottom seals are also able to be upgraded at additional costs.

Locking mechanisms can make a difference in price, as well. All garage doors have built-in locking mechanisms. A standard slide lock is most common and available on models from basic to high-end. Upgrades are available to meet your security needs or level of comfort. An upgraded locking mechanism on a higher-end garage door usually comes at a premium price. Ask your supplier which locks are available for each model and what upgrades are available.

Whether you choose to go with a standard or upgraded garage door, all these variables require consideration.  A standard or upgraded single door can cost between $1,500.00 – $3,500.00. A standard or upgraded double garage door can cost between $2,000.00 & $5,000.00.

A new garage door is an investment in your home for your vehicle, home security, and peace of mind. ACE Garage Door can recommend the right garage door to fit your budget.
